The Key to Spiritual Toning: Keep the Pace

“Step, step, turn, kick. Step, step, turn, kick.”

My exercise video friend pushes me to work harder, pick up the pace and get my heart pumping faster. She greets me every morning at 5:30 AM when I punch “Play” and encourages me to grow stronger and more physically fit. She leads me in exercises I hope will do the trick.

After the millionth time together, I’ve memorized the routine.  Before long, I let go of my concentration. I hear — but don’t hear — her voice. I see — but don’t see — her march. My thoughts shift to other things — the day’s agenda, what I will wear to work, or a problem I’m marinating for a solution.

By the time I re-focus on my video partner, I lag four or five steps behind in the routine. Inattention causes my pace to slow and cancel any aerobic benefit for my efforts.

Isn’t that what happens when I take my eyes off  my spiritual partner, Jesus? When I think I know him so well that I don’t stay in the Word or spend regular time in prayer? I know the drill — so no need to concentrate as diligently. Distractions capture my fancy and, before I know it, I’m neither in synch nor on pace with Christ. I fall into old patterns and grow spiritually flabby.

So, my workout teaches me another lesson and frames my only New Year’s Resolution for 2011. For a strong heart and maximum spiritual health, I must keep my eyes fixed on Jesus or risk vulnerability to all sorts of temptation.

            Study, pray, obey, practice.

            Study, pray, obey, practice.

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour? he asked Peter. “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” (Matthew 26:40-41, NIV)

Gloria – I so look forward to each of your writings, they are inspiring and always seem applicable. Loved today’s entry. It reminds me that I too get in “rote” mode sometimes and don’t practice my faith. It’s a new year with new beginnings and once again I will try to “be all I can be” for Christ. Keep up the good work, it’s such a blessing. Love ya, Debbie
